Project type: Temporary roof covering.

Location: Farm Road, East Wittering, Chichester, PO20.

Client requirements: A quote was given to this client for a temporary roof to be installed over a detached bungalow for re-roofing works and an extension of the roof area. They had been let down by another scaffold company, so they required the tin hat scaffolding to be put up fairly quickly, which was not a problem for us, as we had the space to fit this job in at that particular time.

This was a straightforward temporary roof with three lifts erected on one side and four lifts erected on the other. The hire period given for this project was 18 weeks. We charged this client scaffolding costs of £4500 which included hire, erecting, dismantling and the supply of monarflex sheeting.

Obstacles and challenges we faced:  We did not face any challenges with this scaffolding as access was good, so we were able to get our equipment around the bungalow easily. However, one of the sides was a little tight to put up our framework, but we easily got around this without too many problems.

What we did: We built the temporary roof around all four sides of the bungalow so that our client could extend and put on a new roof. There was a garage attached to the left side of the property, so we were required to beam over the garage because it was unable to take any of the weight of the scaffold. We used aluminium lattice beams to add support on this side of the structure.

We erected this tin hat so that it was 6 metres high at the front of the bungalow and the back was slightly taller at 7 metres high which gave the roof a slight tilt so that any rainwater hitting the roof will run off the lower end. The height of the temporary roof gave our customer plenty of room to complete their renovations. Within the structure we installed the required working lifts that were fully boarded and were installed with fall protection guard rails. We also supplied safety ladder gates along with full ladder access where required. The roof was fully covered with corrugated iron sheets that were fixed to the purlins on the beams using roofing couplers. When the scaffold was erected and the roof was secure, we then added monarflex sheeting around the external perimeter of the tin hat for further weatherproofing.

Hire period: The hire period for this tin hat structure was 18 weeks. Our client used the roof cover for the full 18 weeks.
