Do you need scaffold for solar panel installation or repairs?

Solar panel scaffolding is fast becoming one of our most popular structures, due to householders and businesses wanting to become greener.

We have many case studies below of domestic and commercial properties that required secure access to have panels installed on their roofs.

Why is scaffold needed?

A secure structure is required by the solar installation company so that they can have a safe working platform to work from. The access area is usually at gutter height so that they can connect the frame of the mount to the roofs rafters and then fix the solar panels to this mount from the scaffolding platform that we have erected.

We provide the following with all our Solar PV scaffolds:

  • Safe means of access to any height.
  • Competitive prices.
  • Ladders gates.
  • Ladder access fixed at the end of the platform.
  • Double safety edge protection handrails.
  • Outer toe boards along the whole platform.
  • Gin wheel with rope and pulley (If requested).
  • Loading area for the solar panels to be placed.
  • Handrails up either side of the roof (If required).
  • Quick turnaround.

FAQ's

Not only do we provide access for the initial installation, but our scaffolds are also used for the following reasons:

  • Repairs to the panels and mount.
  • Pest control adding mesh and bird proofing the panels and surrounding areas.
  • Maintenance and servicing.
  • Removal of panels.

Unfortunately, you do not get a discount for the scaffold however there are many grants available through local councils that will give you discounts for making your home greener. Chichester council are offering a “Green scheme” which helps make solar panels more affordable. Click here for the link and more information.

You will notice many buildings in the Chichester area that have roof mounted panels installed and these are called Solar photovoltaic or PV panels and once wired up they will do the following:

  • Use the cells on the panels to get energy from the sun.
  • Convert that energy directly into electricity.
  • To then generate power for your property.

Another type of panel is called the Solar thermal, which is a water heating system that can also be mounted on to roof tops like the solar PV system. The scaffolding we erect will be the same regardless of which system or panels you have installed.

It is highly recommended that you do as most domestic buildings have a gutter height of approximately 5 meters and so the installers would need to access this area safely and securely, and the most appropriate way to gain access to a roof and prevent falls is to have a fully boarded scaffolding structure erected to the building. On most solar installs the scaffold would need to be erected to gutter height, so the installers are able to complete their work successfully.

No, as we mention below, we price this type of structure on different factors and not the length of time you would hire the scaffold for unless it was up for months on end. Our price normally includes up to four weeks hire as standard but there will be no change in price should you hire it for 2 days or 20 days.

The installers can either request an electric hoist (which will be an additional cost to the scaffold) or we can provide and integrate a gin wheel and rope which can be used to safely pull up the panels onto the top working platform, however some installers may wish to pass them up by hand to the top lift. This is normally personal preference so we will supply whatever our client is happy to use.

This type of work normally has a quick turnaround as the installers like to complete the works as quickly and efficiently as possible when adding the panels to the roof. In general, the scaffold is only usually required from 3 to 7 working days but can be extended if necessary, and we are always asked to put the scaffolding up well ahead of the install date, so we will erect the scaffold on site a few days prior, so that the users can arrive on the day and get on with their job without any delays.

This does depend on the length of the area in which the solar panels are going to be installed and how high the property is. We also need to take into consideration the access and how easy it is for us to get our equipment to where we need to put the scaffold up.

However below you will find our guide prices which should give you an indication of costings for a solar panel scaffold:

  • Front only of a 2-story property, with the top lift erected to gutter height, our prices usually start from around £300.00.

  • Or you may also require additional safety handrails to be installed up the gable ends (sides) of the roof around the area you will be working. So, with this included in our price for the front only with extra handrails up the roof we usually charge around the £400.00 mark.
