Project type: Internal birdcage scaffolding.
Location: Lock Lane, Birdham, Chichester, PO20.
Client requirements: This client required a quotation for internal access over a section of an indoor swimming pool so that they could complete light duty repair works to the ceiling. The price given for this birdcage was £700 with 4-weeks hire included.
Obstacles and challenges we faced: We had a large indoor pool in the way which we were required to span over the whole width of, to provide our client with access to the ceiling area directly above. Our team needed to take care not to drop anything in the pool or fall in themselves! They were also required to be extra careful not to cause any damage to the windows, floor and walls of the inside when bringing our equipment into the property.
What we did: We erected an 8.0 metre beam section by 4.0 metres wide framework. Then a 4-metre section was fully boarded out in the centre of the scaffolding beams. We set the birdcage out using foot ties and installed several 8.0 metre lattice beams which acted as the ledgers and spanned across the width of the pool.
When the foot tie was set square, we fixed a middle scaffolding beam to make a maximum span of 2.0 metres between the beams as this birdcage was for light duties only. We were asked by our client not to add handrails to 1 section of the birdcage or fixed ladder access and as this scaffolding was only a foot or so off the ground the risk of falling was minimal. We used a total of 17x 13ft scaffolding boards to create the working platform. We also added toe boards around 3 sides of the boarded area and all standards (upright) tube that were placed on the floor were resting on base plates on top of sole boards to protect the flooring.
Hire period: This birdcage was rented to our customer for a total of 4 weeks so that they could easily complete their light duty work on the ceiling.
