Tin hat for loft conversion, Shopwhyke Road, Chichester, PO20

Project type: Temporary roof scaffolding.

Location: Shopwhyke Road, Chichester, PO20.

Client requirements: This client requested a quotation from our company to put up a temporary roof scaffolding to the rear section of this bungalow to complete their loft conversion works. As it was only the rear of the property and not the whole of the building that needed covering, we charged £3000 with a 12 week hire period.

Obstacles and challenges we faced: We did not have any issues with this scaffolding as the access was clear and there was plenty of room at the back of the bungalow to erect the temporary tin roof.

What we did: We erected an 8-metre high by 10-metres long and 6-metres by 2-metres return by 4-metres wide tin hat structure to the back half of this bungalow, and this was to provide our client with protection from adverse weather whilst they continued with their loft conversion works. The scaffolding had 3 lifts erected in total with the bottom lift boarded out to create a working platform that also had safety handrail protection and toe boards installed.

As we were only covering half of the bungalow, we were required to rest the scaffold lattice beams on the ridge of the roof to enable us to create the roof section of the tin hat. We put double scaffold boards on to the ridge in order to protect the tiles, we then placed the beams on top of the boards. To create more stability, we tied the scaffolding beams into the scaffold framework which was built heavy duty. We then installed corrugated iron sheets as the roof covering and then fixed monarflex sheeting around the perimeter. Ladder access with a ladder gate was also installed to the first lift of this scaffolding structure.

Hire period: We rented this temporary roof scaffold to our client for a period of 12 weeks. They contacted us after the 12 week hire period had expired so our team could dismantle the structure.
