Scaffolding specifications

The scaffolding setup consisted of two main components: a sturdy tower that reached the required height and a walkway connecting the tower directly to the chimney. This arrangement made it easy and safe for the crew to get into position and swap out the old chimney pots.

  • Main access tower specifications and safety features

The main access tower was built with the following approximate dimensions: 4.0m in length, 10.0m in height, and a depth of five boards. It featured double handrails, fully boarded levels, and safety access gates. These elements provided a secure and functional method of vertical access for this project.

  • Access system:

Edge protection: Each working level featured double handrails, consisting of a main guardrail and a mid-rail. This critical feature minimised the risk of falls from the platform’s edge.

Full ladder access: The tower was equipped with ladders that reached all boarded levels, allowing for safe movement throughout.

Ladder safety gates: Each level’s ladder opening was secured with self-closing safety gates to prevent accidental falls and maintain edge protection.

  • Walkway to the chimney

12 boards providing safe access to the chimney.

  • Supporting structure and stability

Side walkway/spur: A narrow walkway was built beside the chimney. Three boards wide and 1.2 metres in depth.

The side section of the scaffold was reinforced to enhance support and scaffold stability. The method of spurring up, which involves installing angled bracing or components to transfer loads and minimise sway, further ensured the scaffold’s stability.
