Project type: Scaffolding for roof access.
Location: Waitrose and partners Chichester, Via Ravenna, PO19 1RD.
Client requirements: Scaffolding was required to a section of roof at the very top of the Waitrose supermarket in Chichester. This was so our client could replace the roof tiles. We gave this customer a price of £5000 with 2 weeks hire.
Obstacles and challenges we faced: The roof section that needed to be accessed was at the very top of the building and in a very awkward location. Our team were required to handball all of the necessary equipment onto the first section of roof and then walk it along to another roof section that needed the access; this was very labour intensive and took a lot of time. Many materials were required for this structure, including beams, various lengths of tubes, multiple fittings and boards.
What we did: Our team’s first task was erecting two 12.0m gable end scaffolds at either end of this part of the building. We installed these platforms at 6 scaffold boards wide. These scaffolds ranged from 4.0m high (2 lifts) to 6.0m tall (3 lifts).
Then we needed to create 2x 12.0m beam sections that would act as walkways; again, these platforms were 6 planks wide and placed at the same height as each other. The beam sections were suspended, so no weight was placed on to the roof, but our client could still easily access the areas needed without damaging any tiles.
At the top of the roof’s ridge, we installed 12 metres of scaffold lattice beams to act as a handrail.
Eash working area and walkway had double handrails and toeboards added for additional fall protection. Ladder gates were installed as an extra safety precaution for workers accessing the lifts via the ladders.
Hire period: This structure was on hire for two weeks, which was plenty of time for our client to replace all broken tiles.
