Project type: Scaffold staging, ramps and stands.

Location:  Goodwood Festival of Speed, Goodwood House, PO18.

Client requirements: A company contacted us for a quotation to put up freestanding platforms/stands for the eBay garage exhibition at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024. A large platform area was needed for the general public to walk on and view the eBay Garage exhibitions, special guest speakers, games and tech. We have many years of experience working at the Festival of Speed and enjoy doing this type of scaffolding. We provided this customer with a competitive quotation, which was accepted.

Obstacles and challenges: There were no issues whilst erecting the stands, stages and ramps. We had direct access to where the scaffolds needed to go, and there was enough room for our truck and scaffolders to move materials and equipment around freely.

What we did:

  • The main section of the structure measured 17m by 19m by 17m. This area was 13 scaffold boards deep all the way around and varied between 0.3m and 1.4m high.
  • A 3-metre high ramp was attached to the main lower level of the scaffold.
  • We also installed two lower-level scaffolds, which were 12 metres long and 0.3m to 1m high, and between 10 to 11 scaffold boards deep. These lower levels were being used for containers to be craned on top of.
  • We then erected another two 6-metre-long scaffold stands that were 0.3m to 1m high and 10 scaffold boards deep.
  • Our scaffolders were required to ensure that all standard spacing was a maximum of 1.2 metres apart to accommodate the weight of the eBay stand; the minimum upright standard spacings were 800mm.
  • Sole boards were used for every standard (upright) tube to protect the ground and prevent sinkage.
  • We used board retaining clips to secure all the scaffold boards.
  • Our team also had to plan a selection of scaffolding boards to create a smooth semi-circle section on 1 part of the eBay stand.
  • All of the stages, ramps and stands we erected had foot tie lifts installed to provide more stability and support to all structures.

Hire period: We supplied all scaffolds with a 6-week hire period as the customer needed time before the Festival to create and fully decorate the eBay garage experience. Once the Festival was complete, we were required to dismantle all structures as soon as possible.
