Project type: Scaffold for access to a steel frame.

Location: White Horse Caravan Site, Selsey, Chichester, PO20 9EJ.

Client requirements: A contractor got in touch with us as they required a quotation to provide scaffolding platforms around a steel frame inside a commercial building on the White Horse site at Bunn Leisure in Selsey. We quoted this client a competitive price, including a 1 week hire period.

Obstacles and challenges: Renovation works were taking place within this building, so our structure was to be erected around two pillars and close to a spiral staircase. We were required to ensure that our equipment did not damage anything. Access was okay because the building was on a large caravan site/holiday village, so there was enough space for our truck to park nearby and for our scaffolders to walk materials through the building safely.

What we did:

  • This internal scaffold was not a straight run, so we were required to build a 4-metre by 4-metre splay platform around two pillars connected to the beams above.
  • This structure was 4 metres high with two scaffold lifts.
  • Only the top lift was fully boarded and used as the working platform.
  • The scaffolding provided clear access to the RSJ beams above, so our client could complete their work.
  • Both sides of the platform areas were eight timber scaffold boards wide; however, we had to cut our boards to fit around the steel pillars when creating the working space so that no holes were left.
  • We installed double handrails and toe boards around the edge of the working area to prevent falling from height.
  • A single ladder was fixed to one side of the scaffolding for our client to gain safe access to the top lift.

Hire period: This scaffolding was supplied to the client with only 1 week’s hire as their work was not time-consuming and would take a maximum of seven days to complete. We were then contacted when they needed the scaffold dismantled, which we booked for our next available removal date.
