Project type: Chimney scaffold.
Location: Portfield retail park, Chichester, PO19.
Client requirements: We provided this customer with a quotation for 4-lift platform scaffold to access the top of a chimney on one of the retail buildings. The client wanted to remove the roof of the chimney and rebuild the brickwork. We charged £850 for a 4-lift scaffolding with a hire period of 2 weeks.
Obstacles and challenges we faced: There were no issues faced when erecting this structure, access was fine as we could park close to the area. A pavement licence was not needed at this scaffolding was erected on private land.
What we did: This structure was 4.0 metres wide on the first 2 lifts and 4m square on the top 2 lifts. It was approximately 10 metres high with a total of 4 scaffolding lifts. The first two lifts were erected to gutter height for ladder access and so the 2nd lift was fully boarded – 5 scaffolding planks wide with handrails, toe boards and a ladder gate installed.
The 3rd lift of scaffolding was erected by installing 10ft transoms onto the sloping roof which were rested on a scaffolding board to protect the tiles. For this access platform we used 8x 13ft boards and lapped 8ft boards on top to give access to the sides and base of the chimney. The left-hand side was 3 boards wide, and the right was a little wider at 5 boards. We installed handrails and a ladder gate to this lift also.
The 4th lift was erected by utilising the top handrails of the 3rd lift and installing them onto the roof on top of a scaffolding board. We then installed 8ft upright puncheon tubes at the rear of this platform and 13ft puncheons to the front. We spur braced the 8ft puncheons from the platform below to give the inside tubes more support. We then boarded around the front and back of the stack with 13ft scaffolding boards and again lapped 8ft boards to make this working platform 3 boards wide on the back and front, 5 boards wide on the right side and 3 on the left side. Again, this platform was installed will all of the usual fall protection handrails, toe boards etc.
We provided 3x metal ladders which were fixed to the scaffolding.
Hire period: This scaffolding was rented to our customer for 2 weeks as that was ample time for them to be able to remove the roof from the chimney and rebuild the brickwork.
