Client requirements: A quote was given to this customer who needed a price for a scaffolding inside the Selsey Methodist Church. They required safe access to be able to complete decoration works to the entire roof area inside this historical building. We quoted our client £5000 with a hire period of 8 weeks included.

Obstacles and challenges we faced: Our teams have had a lot of experience in erecting scaffolds in churches, cathedrals, and other places of worship, so they are fully aware and conscious of being extra careful when handling our equipment and erecting scaffolds in historical places. This scaffolding took us a little longer than usual to put up as we wanted to ensure that nothing was damaged or broken.

What we did: We erected a scaffolding that gave full and safe access to the roof and wall areas. This measured approximately 55m in length and was a total of 2 scaffolding lifts.

First, we installed scaffold around the internal perimeter of the building (3 sides) so our client could easily move around the church on this level for painting and decorating. This scaffolding was 5 scaffold boards wide and had double handrails and toe boards fitted for fall prevention. Ladder access was provided to this lift.

We then built the 2nd platform which was a large 10m wide and 5m high birdcage. We used lattice beams underneath this platform to give extra support. The birdcage was extended to every edge of the church walls, so no handrails or edge protection was needed. When laying the scaffold boards down to create the working area we were required to leave small gaps for the cables of the chandelier lighting to fit through. Our client then had full and clear access to the whole roof area for painting. Ladder access was alo provided to the birdcage scaffold platform.

Any ledger or transom tubes that were touching the walls were fitted with yellow plastic end caps to protect the church walls from damage.

Hire period: This scaffolding structure was hired to our client for 8 weeks to ensure they were able to fully complete their painting works
